There’s a philosophical idea from Gabriel Marcel that’s been sitting with me lately....the difference between a problem and a mystery.
A problem is something you stand outside of. It can be solved, measured, and repeated.
In horsemanship, that’s where most of our education lives. How do I load my horse into the trailer? How do I fix brace in my horse? How do I get a better transition? There are countless methods, steps, and systems available to help solve the problems. And those matter!
But a mystery is something you are inside of. It can’t be solved....it can only be experienced. If you’ve spent any real time with horses, then you know. This is where things get interesting.
Why does a prey animal choose to trust us? Why does it sometimes feel like thought moves faster than signal. Why can one quiet moment with a horse change something in you that no technique ever could? The more I learn the more I find myself outside the bounds of mechanics, and into the world of alchemy....
Real horsemanship lives in both places. You learn the skills so you can show up clearly…but what happens next....that connection, that softness, that shift...isn’t something you force. It’s something that emerges. And you can’t manufacture it. And maybe that’s the real work.
